Time: Wednesday, February 15 at 7:30 PM
Location: Trinity Church
The presentation will be delivered by Ted Lawson, Executive Director of SAVE LIVES NOW NEW YORK FOUNDATION, INC. (SSLNNY).
Ted on Wall Street in Investment Banking for 40 years before being forced to retire because of cardiomyopathy. In 2004 his disease had advanced to Stage IV and he needed a heart pump inserted in his chest to augment the action of his own heart. He was then put on a "waiting list" for a heart transplant during which time (14 months) he set out to learn what he could about the transplantation and organ donor system. On June 24, 2004, he received a phone call instructing him to "come right away, we have a donor heart for you" and received the heart of a 51 year old woman whose family, at a time of great grief, shock, and confusion, agreed to her wishes to be a donor.
When he recovered, Ted started volunteering on a full time basis at the New York Organ Donor Network, the agency responsible for matching donors and recipients in the New York Metropolitan area. He started their in-house volunteer training program, created their Speakers Bureau and its training program and is currently a public speaker on behalf of organ donation. When the "Presumed Consent" bill (which would assume that a person was a donor unless they signed a document to opt out) failed to pass the New York State Legislature, he, along with Rocco Andriola and Tom Hales created the SAVE LIVES NOW NEW YORK FOUNDATION, INC. .
to explore public policy initiatives concerning organ donation and transplantation in an effort to change the donation laws of New York State.
Thousands of lives are saved every year by organ transplants. Come to learn more about the pros and cons of this process from a man who has been there.
“Informing the Public: Heart Health, Safety and CPR” on Tuesday, March 27, at 7:30 p.m.
Time: Tuesday, March 27 at 7:30 PM
Location: Trinity Church
The presentation will be delivered by Ms. Jeri Switzer, a CPR instructor certified by the American Heart Association.
Ms. Switzer will discuss the importance of keeping your heart healthy with reminders of what that entails in terms of diet and exercise, as well as the limitations you need to put on yourself to avoid unnecessary strain on your heart if you're not in optimum condition. She'll also explain the signs and symptoms of a heart attack (which can be different for a man or a woman), the necessity of reacting quickly and the first things to do in case of an attack. She'll demonstrate how to handle an obstructed airway (the Heimlech maneuver), a proven life-saver and how to administer CPR, another proven life-saver. However, this is not a course in CPR, merely an explanation and demonstration. For those interested in becoming certified in CPR, Ms. Switzer will suggested locations where courses can be taken.
We are each responsible for our own health and well-being, and that can best be done by arming ourselves with solid information on what is needed.
