Easter Egg Wish Tree

If you would like to give a gift to Trinity this Easter season but are not quite sure what to get, look no further than the Easter Egg Wish Tree.  A tree full of Easter eggs will be located in the narthex commencing March 18 and each egg will contain an item from Trinity’s wish list.  There will be a variety of services and supplies from which to choose.  Or if you prefer, a donation toward the purchase of any wish list items would be most welcome.  Thank you for considering making a donation!

June Book Club

Inspired by the true story of Eyam, a village in the rugged hill country of England, “Year of Wonders” is a richly detailed evocation of a particular moment in history.  An itinerant tailor unwittingly carries the plague from London to an isolated village with an infected bolt of cloth.  As the villagers begin to die, one by one, it is decided that they should isolate themselves in the village in order to prevent the contagion from spreading.  The “year of wonders” experienced by the villagers is told through the eyes of an intelligent and courageous young widow, Anna Firth, who accomplishes things she never would have attempted otherwise as the plague brings out the noblest and the basest behavior of the residents.  What do you do when young children are orphaned, or when the women who always prepared herbal remedies die?  In spite of the grim subject, the book is eloquently written, as if by someone of the times, vividly detailing every day life as the inhabitants of the village struggle to survive.

Summer Book Club

As a consequence of the summer hiatus of the Book Club, a rather long book has been selected for a summer read and will be discussed at the September meeting.  “The Dovekeepers,” by Alice Hoffman, a tour de force of imagination and research, is set in ancient Israel.  In 70 CE, nine hundred Jews, on the mountain of Masada in the Judean desert, held out against the Roman armies for months.  Only two women and five children survived.  Based on this tragic event, Hoffman weaves a compelling tale of four extraordinary bold, resourceful and sensuous women, each of whom comes to Masada by a different path.  The lives of these women intersect in the desperate days of the siege.  All are dovekeepers and all are keeping secrets, yet they soon develop a loyalty so fierce that they’re willing to sacrifice everything for each other and the children entrusted to them.  Hoffman breathes an unforgettable and vibrant life into these tragic events.

The Book Club meetings are at 7:00 p.m. and last about an hour.  Everyone is welcome.
