January 2010

So this is 2010. The beginning of a new year always has the notion of a fresh start. There is something promising and hopeful about the beginning of a new year.

When I was a child I wrote at the end of a year a long list of what I would do differently in the coming year. Had I ever followed through with this list I would have been a brilliant dream kid. However, around January 3rd of a given year I hardly remembered the list and I was back to normal.

New Year’s resolutions are probably more often forgotten than realized, and yet, I think there is something to them; coming up with a resolution means that we are willing to reflect on the past year and that we realize that a few changes would probably be good for us. Of course, this does not mean that we are ready for changes (hence the January 3rd syndrome).

Whether we follow through with New Year’s resolutions, or not, we know that the coming year will have its joys and its setbacks, its blessings and its share of pain – although I hope that the joys and blessings are abundantly. But no matter what the New Year brings for each of us we are kept in God’s hand. That’s the assurance and the promise of God which we have received. The New Year is a gift from God for which we can be thankful.

Happy New Year!
