“I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? “
Isaiah 43:19a
To do a new thing is very much what we do as human beings. There is always the next version of a computer, the safer car, the better medication, the healthier food. The tax system, health care, education, environmental protection – there is always something that needs to be reformed and improved. In our personal lives there is always something new that we begin with the best intentions - especially at the beginning of a new year.
God also is one to do new things. Throughout history with humankind God always found new ways, new beginnings when his people strayed away. With the birth of Christ we have celebrated God’s new way to relate to us. Becoming human is God’s ultimate gift to us that will always stay with us, a gift that will never need an upgrade or a better and improved new version. But it is a gift that keeps maturing in time as we grow in faith. Can we perceive it?
